Backroom Exit: Play the Backrooms Escape Room Free Online
The exit door is the first thing you see in Backroom Exit, exit sign lit above it, and it's padlocked shut. Getting through takes two keys, an axe, a wrench, a TV remote and four gems spread across seven areas of yellow wallpaper. We played the opening of Backroom Exit on October 7, 2026. Then we opened the game's own level file and mapped every item and lock, so below you'll find the route, the controls, why you can't copy the padlock code from a video, and what waits at the door.

What Is Backroom Exit?
Backroom Exit is a free first-person escape room set in the Backrooms, the endless yellow-wallpaper maze from internet horror. You start in front of a locked exit and work through seven areas, finding keys, tools and gems that open the next lock. It runs in your browser.
It's a Unity game by a developer listed as stelennnn on GameMonetize, where it went up on July 3, 2026. The build calls itself version 1.0, and the level menu has exactly one entry: 01. So this is one handmade level, not a random maze. The look is pure Backrooms, though. Patterned wallpaper, grubby carpet, flat ceiling lights, and a soundtrack of ambient noise loops with a heartbeat track on top.
Why is every portal suddenly full of Backrooms games? Kane Parsons' film Backrooms became the highest-grossing movie in A24's history, about $367 million worldwide according to JoBlo, and it started streaming on HBO Max on September 25, 2026. A free backrooms game in a browser tab is the obvious next stop after the credits.
Backroom Exit is a puzzle box first and a horror game second. Nothing in the level is set up to chase you while you explore. The tension comes from quiet corridors, a door you can see but can't open, and a growing pile of locks.
How to Play Backroom Exit
You can play Backroom Exit right on this page. Give it a moment to load: the game files add up to about 49 MB. Here's how a run goes.
- 1Press Play
The title screen shows BACKROOM EXIT painted on a corridor wall and a single Play button. An ad may run first; ours had a countdown and a SKIP button.
- 2Look at the exit
Your first view is through a doorway to a pair of doors under an orange exit sign with a green icon. They're barred and padlocked, so the exit is the last thing you'll open.
- 3Aim the dot and click
Walk with WASD or the arrow keys, turn with the mouse, and left click whatever sits under the dot in the middle of the screen. On a phone, use the joystick and the hand button.
- 4Equip the right item
Pickups go into an inventory with nine slots. Scroll the mouse wheel to swap what's in your hand, or tap an item on a touchscreen, then use it on the lock it fits.
- 5Collect four gems
One sits in the fridge, one in the cabinet with the number padlock, and two hide behind vent covers held on by four nuts each.
- 6Open the chest, then the exit
With the TV's clue and all four gems, the chest opens. Inside is key 2, which fits the padlock on the exit doors.
Backroom Exit controls
GameMonetize's listing gives the controls. WASD or the arrow keys move you, the mouse turns the view, left click interacts and the scroll wheel swaps inventory items. On touchscreens you move with the joypad, interact with the hand button and select items to equip them.
One quirk. The joystick, the hand button and a round menu button stayed on screen in our desktop session too, so ignore the first two if you're on a keyboard. The menu button (three lines, top right) opens the pause panel, which in the build has a sound toggle, a restart button, a home button and a close button.
Backroom Exit Tips (and Where Everything Is)
The padlock code is random, so read the wall
The cabinet with the number padlock wants four digits, and they're painted on a wall in the alley. The script behind those wall numbers has a routine named, in Spanish, "generate four-digit number", and the scene ships with 1234 as a placeholder. Expect your padlock code to differ from the one in any video. The flashlight lies just past the boarded door, so grab it on the way in.
Shapes before the axe
The fridge is locked with a shape latch: three slots for three shape tokens, and the inventory icons show a square, a triangle and a circle. One token sits in a chest of drawers that's missing its lever, and that lever is in a cabinet near door 1. Open the fridge for the axe and your first gem.
Count the nuts
Each vent cover is held by four nuts, and the wrench from the code cabinet takes them off. There are two covers, one a few steps from where you spawn and one in the alley, and each hides a gem. Three gems and stuck? You've probably skipped a vent.
Turn the TV on before the chest
The TV remote is in the alley, and the TV is in another part of the level. The level file points a hidden camera at four gem shapes so the screen can show them. That's your clue for the chest.
Sweep slowly and watch the dot
The crosshair has white, green and red states in the game's code. Move it slowly over shelves, drawers and doors and watch for the change, because small pickups like keys are easy to walk past in the yellow gloom.

Three Backrooms games compared (store pages and listings, as of October 7, 2026)
Want a quick escape room in a tab? Stay here. Want dozens of levels and friends yelling over proximity chat? That's Escape the Backrooms. The itch.io Backroom Exit is a different game entirely, a random-maze shooter by choco_dede, so don't let the shared name throw you.
Is Backroom Exit Worth Playing?
Yes, if you like escape rooms more than chase horror. As a backrooms game it nails the look, and it builds a tidy chain of locks out of a handful of rooms.
What we liked
- The setup. The exit is visible from the first second, which makes every locked drawer feel personal.
- Real puzzles: a shape latch, a four-digit padlock, bolted vent covers and a TV clue.
- A random code. No walkthrough can type it in for you.
- Built for phones too, with a joystick and a hand button.
What held it back
- One level. Once you're out, there's nothing new to find.
- About 49 MB of files before the title screen appears.
- An ad can play before you start.
- The touch buttons show up on desktop as well, cluttering the left side of the screen.
- Almost no horror until the very end, if you came for a chase.
We only played the opening ourselves. The rest of this guide reads the level file, and we'll update it once we've walked out the front door.
Can You Play Backroom Exit at School?
Maybe. It's a browser game with no install, so a Chromebook can run it when the network lets both steal-brainrot.co and GameMonetize's game server through. We can't promise it's unblocked anywhere, and this page isn't a proxy. Busy school Wi-Fi may also take a while over the 49 MB download. Our unblocked games page has more picks with the same caveat.

How we tested this game
We loaded the GameMonetize build in Chrome on a machine without a graphics card and played the opening: the title screen, the ad break, the first rooms and the padlocked exit. Frame rates on that machine were too low for a full run, so the room-by-room route comes from the game's own level file, which lists every item, lock and area.
We don't show star ratings or play counts on game pages unless we can check them. Spotted something that changed? Tell us.
