Master Chess: Play Free Online vs AI, a Friend or the World
We tried the four-move Scholar's Mate on Master Chess's easiest computer opponent, and it shut the door on move three with a knight to g6. That's a good sign for a free chess game. On October 7, 2026 we played every mode of Master Chess Multiplayer: the AI, a local two-player board, the online lobby, the 5,000-puzzle Chess Quiz and the match analyzer. Here's what each one does and what to expect.

What Is Master Chess?
Master Chess is a free browser chess game by Codethislab. You can play the computer at four difficulty levels, play a friend on the same device, join strangers in an online lobby, or work through 5,000 checkmate puzzles. Everything runs in the page, with no account.
The Master Chess on Poki is one of the site's best-known games: Poki lists a March 2019 release, an update in December 2025 and a 4.4 rating from 1,956,723 votes, as of October 7, 2026. The version on this page is the Multiplayer edition, which GamePix added on May 18, 2021. Its menu carries the CODETHISLAB logo, and next to the classic modes it adds an online lobby, a Chess Quiz and an Analyze screen.
The board is a polished 3D wooden set by default, with a flat 2D board one menu click away. Clicking a piece lights up every legal square, so you can't make an illegal move by accident. Each player panel counts captured pieces and shows a percentage that started at 50.0% and moved as positions changed (52.5%, then 60.6% in our puzzles). The game never labels it, but it behaves like a balance or evaluation meter.
One quirk worth knowing: the game opens in your browser's language. Ours started in Chinese until we switched it to English in the menu.
How to Play Master Chess
You can play Master Chess online right here. Press the green start button and the main menu loads in a few seconds. This is how a first game against the computer goes.
- 1Pick Training
Training means playing against the AI. Choose your colour (white, black or the half-and-half option) and a clock: unlimited, 1, 3, 5 or 10 minutes.
- 2Choose a level
Beginner, Amateur, Professional or Master. The board appears the moment you pick one.
- 3Move a piece
Click or tap a piece and its legal squares light up in blue. Click one of them to move. The AI replies within a few seconds.
- 4Use the side buttons
Next to the board are a back-arrow button and a pause button. Pause covers the board with a PAUSE card and a play button.
- 5Change the board
The menu (three lines, top right) has Choose Chessboard for 3D or 2D, plus Restart and Main Menu, which asks ARE YOU SURE? first.
- 6Try the other modes
Back on the main menu, Play Local hands one device between two players, and Chess Quiz serves puzzles one at a time.
Master Chess controls
There's only one control: click or tap. Poki's listing says the same, "Tap or mouse click to move pieces." Online games add Offer a Draw and Resign to the menu, and the Settings panel has Language, Full Screen and Audio switches.
GamePix marks this build as mobile friendly in any orientation, and nothing in it needs a keyboard.
Master Chess Puzzles: The Chess Quiz
The Chess Quiz is the part of Master Chess most worth your time if you want to get better. It holds five packs of 1,000 chess puzzles each, and every pack tracks your progress and accuracy. Puzzle 1 of Pack 1 says "Checkmate in 1 move" in the corner, shows a counter of moves left, and offers a lightbulb hint button.
We solved the first two. In puzzle 1, white plays Qe8: the knight on d6 protects the queen and the black king on d7 has nowhere to go. Puzzle 2 flips the board so you play black, and Qxg2 is mate because the rook on d2 protects the queen. Both times the panel flashed CORRECT! and offered a retry button and a next button. Back on the pack screen, Pack 1 read 2/1000 with 100.0% accuracy.
Master Chess Tips (From Our Games)
Don't expect a cheap win on Beginner
We opened 1.e4, then Bc4 and Qh5, aiming for mate on f7. The Beginner AI answered e5, Ne7 and then Ng6, which blocks the queen's diagonal to f7. It isn't Master strength, but it saw the threat.
Start with the quiz, not the hardest AI
Mate-in-one puzzles train exactly what you need against the computer: spotting the move that ends the game, and each one is a single position, so you can fit a few into any spare minute.
Use the lightbulb sparingly
Each pack shows an accuracy figure. Solve on your own first and you'll see whether you're actually improving.
Quick match finds opponents, but they come and go
The lobby gave us a random name (Pink Porcupine) with buttons to reroll or edit it. Around 11:30 pm on October 7 (our time) it listed 147 rooms: 106 with no clock, 38 at 5 minutes, 2 at 10 minutes and 1 at 3 minutes. QUICK MATCH (NO TIME) paired us with an opponent called guest-300 in seconds, then a CONNECTION LOST card appeared before anyone had moved. Analyze later recorded that game as 1-0 to us.
Switch to the 2D board for clarity
The 3D pieces look great, but on a small screen the flat 2D set is easier to read at a glance. The switch is in the menu under Choose Chessboard.
Master Chess Multiplayer vs Master Chess on Poki
Search for Master Chess and the Poki version comes up first, so it's fair to ask what's different here. Both come from Codethislab. This table compares our hands-on look at the Multiplayer edition with what Poki's own listing says about its version.

Master Chess Multiplayer (this page) vs Master Chess on Poki (as of October 7, 2026)
If you only want a quick game against the computer or a friend, either version works. If you want puzzles, online opponents or a record of your matches, the Multiplayer edition on this page has them. Codethislab's chess also turns up on Playgama, whose listing mentions online play and a daily leaderboard; we didn't test that copy.
Is Master Chess Worth Playing?
Yes. It's one of the most complete ways to play chess online for free in a browser tab, and it doesn't ask you to sign up for anything.
What we liked
- Five real modes, from casual AI games to a 5,000-puzzle trainer.
- Legal-move highlighting, which makes it friendly for beginners.
- A good-looking 3D board, with a clear 2D alternative.
- Puzzle progress and accuracy that survive a reload.
What held it back
- Online play is hit and miss: our quick match connected, then dropped before a move.
- The percentage on the player panels is never explained.
- The game opens in your browser's language, which can surprise you.
- No ratings, ladders or friend lists in the lobby, just room names and clocks.
Best for players who want a solid AI opponent, a quick game with a friend on one screen, or a long list of chess puzzles.
Can You Play Master Chess at School?
It depends on your network. Master Chess is a light browser game, so a Chromebook runs it when both steal-brainrot.co and GamePix's servers get through the filter. The online lobby may need more than a filtered network allows. We can't promise it's unblocked anywhere, and this page isn't a proxy. Our unblocked games page has more picks with the same caveat.

How we tested this game
We played the GamePix build in Chrome on a machine without a graphics card: a Beginner game against the AI, the pause and game menus, both board styles, two Chess Quiz puzzles, an online quick match, Play Local, Analyze, and a reload to check that puzzle progress saves.
We don't show star ratings or play counts on game pages unless we can check them. Spotted something that changed? Tell us.
