Basketball Stars: Play Free Online, Controls & Tips
A Basketball Stars match gets 60 seconds of game clock, but the clock stops after every basket, so a close game runs well past a minute. That's the kind of thing you only learn by playing it and reading its code, and on October 7, 2026 we did both: training, a tournament round, the 2-player menus and a reload save test. Below are the controls, the four supershots, the hidden match rules and the jump-shot timing that went 4 for 4 for us in training.

What Is Basketball Stars?
Basketball Stars is a free 2D basketball game by MadPuffers where you play 1-on-1 or 2-on-2 against the computer or a friend on the same keyboard. Big-headed players shoot, dunk, steal and block in 60-second matches, and every player carries a charged supershot.
MadPuffers is the studio behind the Moto X3M bike series, and Basketball Stars is one of its biggest web hits. Poki lists a May 2019 release and a 4.2 rating from 2,558,298 votes (as of October 7, 2026). The build on this page comes from GamePix, which added it on July 2, 2020. Its menu shows version 1.0.9gp, and its main code file is still named basketball_legends_2019.
The cast is cartoon caricatures on parody teams. Scroll the team picker and you'll find Indiana Puffers, Mami Helf, Pocket, Elk Forward, Tiranozavrs and Blazi P, each logo a wink at a real NBA franchise. Under every player sits a supershot label: Mega Dunk, Defence, Alley-Oop or Fast Break.
The main menu offers 1 Player (Tournament, Random Match, Training), 2 Players, Quick Match and Credits, plus an achievements board with 19 trophies. That's a lot of game for a browser tab, and every match is short.
How to Play Basketball Stars
You can play Basketball Stars online right here, no download. This is how our first session went, from the start button to a full tournament bracket.
- 1Start the game
Press the green start button on the GamePix screen. The MadPuffers loader runs for a few seconds, then the main menu appears.
- 2Warm up in Training
Pick 1 PLAYER, then TRAINING. There's no clock and the ball comes straight back to you after every shot, so it's the place to learn the jump-shot timing.
- 3Pick a team and a mode
In Random Match or Tournament, the arrows cycle through the teams. Choose 1 vs 1 or 2 vs 2, and check each player's supershot label before you press PLAY.
- 4Score with a jump shot
Press Up to jump and X near the top of the jump. Run into the paint first and the same move turns into a dunk.
- 5Defend
Press X right next to the ball handler to steal. Down blocks a shot on defence and pump-fakes on offence. Double-tap a direction to dash.
- 6Fire the supershot
When the round icon in the top-left corner lights up, press Z. The meter refills as you play.
- 7Beat the clock
Each match has 60 seconds on the clock. If the score is tied at the buzzer, a 15-second overtime starts.
Basketball Stars controls
The game's own HOW TO PLAY screen (the ? button during a match) gives Player 1 the arrow keys, X for action and Z for the supershot. Player 2 gets W A S D, L for action and K for the supershot. Action means shoot when you have the ball and steal when you don't; Down (or S) means pump fake on offence and block on defence.
In Basketball Stars 2 player matches, both control sets work at once. Dashing needs two taps of the same direction in quick succession. The game's code allows less than half a second between them. On phones and tablets, the code draws on-screen arrows plus action and supershot buttons. In a desktop browser you won't see them, even in a phone-sized window, so on a computer it's keyboard only.
Basketball Stars Tips (From Training and the Game's Code)
Shoot in the air, not on the floor
The game adds random scatter to every jump shot, and one part of it depends on height. In the code, a ball released high in your jump gets no vertical scatter at all, while one released on the floor gets the full amount. Our timing was Up, then X about a third of a second later, and it went 4 for 4 from the spot where Training starts you.
Stop running before you shoot
Your sideways speed at the moment of release adds more scatter. Dash to get open, let go of the arrow, then jump. It feels slower. It goes in more often.
Pick your distance
Distance adds its own penalty, and it isn't a straight line. According to the code, short jumpers and shots from right around the three-point line carry a small one, long twos a few steps inside the arc carry the biggest one short of it, and anything far beyond the arc is a heave. So if you're going to step back, step all the way back for three points.
Keep shooting at the buzzer
When time runs out with the ball in the air, the game waits for it to land, and a make still counts. There's even a Buzzer Beater achievement for doing it five times.
Get close before you steal
A steal only works from very close: 55 pixels from the ball handler on a court the game draws 1,066 pixels wide. Lunging with X from a few steps away just wastes the moment.
Use Mega Dunk from anywhere
Players with Mega Dunk can trigger it far from the hoop. We pressed Z at half court in Training, the player warped to the rim, dunked for 2 points, and the meter was charging again a couple of seconds later.
Basketball Stars vs Basketball Legends 2020
MadPuffers made a second big-head basketball game, Basketball Legends 2020, and portals often list the two side by side. They share the formula, so the differences are in the details. Here's how they compare, using our play-test and the Poki and CrazyGames listings.

Basketball Stars vs Basketball Legends 2020 (as of October 7, 2026)
Basketball Stars is the more popular of the two by Poki's vote count, and it's the one you can play on this page. If you outgrow it, Legends adds a third player per team, but the shooting, stealing and supershot ideas carry straight over.
Is Basketball Stars Worth Playing?
Yes, especially in Basketball Stars 2 player mode with a friend on the same keyboard. Matches are short, the dunk and block animations are a joy, and there's more depth in the shooting than the cartoon heads suggest.
What we liked
- Three ways to play together: 1v1, 2v2, or both of you against the CPU.
- Real basketball ideas: threes, pump fakes, blocks, steals and buzzer-beaters.
- Four different supershots, so picking a player actually changes how you play.
- A full tournament with a quarterfinal, semifinal, final and 3rd-place match, and it saves.
What held it back
- No online play. Two-player means two people at one keyboard.
- The game never explains the clock, the overtime or how shot accuracy works.
- Every match we played used the same arena, so the look never changes.
- On a computer it's keyboard only; the touch buttons are for phones and tablets.
Best for quick head-to-head sessions and for anyone who liked Moto X3M and wants MadPuffers' take on a sport.
Can You Play Basketball Stars Unblocked at School?
It depends on your network. Basketball Stars is a light HTML5 game with no download, so a Chromebook runs it when both steal-brainrot.co and GamePix's game servers get through the filter. We can't promise it's unblocked anywhere, and this page isn't a proxy. Our unblocked games page has more picks with the same caveat.

How we tested this game
We played the GamePix build in Chrome on a machine without a graphics card: Training, a 1v1 Random Match, a tournament round, the 2 Players and Tournament menus, the achievements board and a reload save test, then checked phone-sized windows. Match rules and shot accuracy come from the game's own code.
